Lime

​

Lime is primarily a soil amendment or conditioner and not a fertilizer, as is commonly thought. Lime performs several important functions:​

​

1. Corrects soil acidity



2. Furnishes important plant nutrients—calcium and magnesium

3. Reduces toxicity of certain elements in the soil such as aluminum, manganese, and iron. 

4. It promotes availability of major plant nutrients. Calcium acts as a regulator and aids in bringing about the desirable range of availability of many plant nutrients. Some elements which lime aids in regulating are zinc, copper, and especially phosphorus.



5. It increases beneficial bacterial activity and hence induces favorable soil structure and relationships. The soil becomes more porous, increasing air circulation and the ability of the soil to absorb and hold moisture.

Fertilizer and Lime

​Fertilizer

In addition to sunlight, CO2(Carbon Dioxide) and water, plants need certain elements in order to produce the compounds that they require to live. The most needed are nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. There are a number of others.

​

Fertilizers are an attempt to replace these elements into the soil so that plants can grow faster than they would if you waited for nature to replenish these things "normally" (mainly by decay).

But if you add to much fertilizer then the plants can get "burned" and will lose productivity. In addition, Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium are macro nutrients.Fertilizing your lawn assures it has the nutrients needed during the winter months(winterizing) and produces healthy grass as the warmer months arrive.



• At a minimum, fertilize 3 times a year--Late spring, Early Fall, and Late Fall.

• At a maximum, 6 times/year--Early Spring, Late spring, Late Summer, Early Fall, Late Fall.
